There are five important advantages that make Co-operative housing a more attractive alternative to owning or renting on the commercial market:
- Co-op housing fee only rise with increases in operating costs. Over time, charges become substantially cheaper than those in comparable private rental units.
- Co-op housing ensures an equal voice among residents in any decisions affecting their homes.
- Co-op housing provides a unique chance for people to build a real community. Through their working relationships within the co-op, members become aware of each other's needs and are in a better position to provide help and support when it's needed. This is done through education and participation.
- Members have the right to permanent residency. Only wilful and serious breach of the Co-operative's rules and regulations or occupancy bylaws will result in loss of this right. Such as: arrears of fees, not attending AGMs, lack of participation, etc.
- Members can move out at any time, provided that they give proper notice of 65 days to the end of the month.
